facebook/myspace/xanga etc.

We believe that facebook, myspace, xanga and other social networking sites have a positive effect on social capital. These websites help people stay in touch after graduating or moving or just because of the fast pace of life nowadays. In moderation, these websites are beneficial and keep us from "bowling alone" but in excess these websites keep us from getting out of the house or away from our blackberries/iphones. People sometimes get wrapped up in the world they create for themselves on these websites and they forget that there is a real world out there beyond the computer screen. These sites sometimes keep friends from having face to face contact and instead they encourage computer chats, which involve no real contact.
